Two brothers carried the same ache: a mother neither could remember, and a father they feared they barely knew.

This is the story of Rosa Antoniou Cassimati — the woman history nearly erased — and the sons whose lives she shaped without ever knowing it.

In 1850s Kythera, a young woman named Rosa Cassimati fell in love with an Irish army surgeon. What followed was a marriage that crossed empires and religions, a separation that broke a family in two, and two sons — Lafcadio Hearn and James Daniel Hearn — who spent their lives reaching for a mother they could not remember and a father who could not stay. Four generations later, her great-great-grandson went looking for her.
